Hanuman is a vintage Wayang Golek puppet. These puppets were used in traditional Wayang Golek performances in Java, Indonesia. Wayang Golek puppet theater is used to tell the stories of Hindu Ramayana and Mahabharata epics, as well as Islamic and indigenous folk tales. These colorful performances by puppet masters are accompanied by song and the Gamelan orchestra, and are part of the rich cultural heritage of Indonesia.
As the puppet master Tizar Purbaya once explained, “the Wayang puppet is not a doll. It follows the dalang (puppet master), but the dalang must also follow it. He gives it soul and it, in return, gives life to him.”
On the island Hanuman meets an old grandfather in robes. The old man is none other than Resi Gautama, his own grandfather. Resi Gautama gives magic to Hanoman so Hanuman has the ability to fly. After saying good-bye, Hanuman sped away into space to Alengka.
