Description

This traditional ulos cloth from the Batak people in North Sumatra is woven using warp ikat and is at least 50 years old.   Most ulos are made from cotton; this piece has exceptionally fine theads and is either very fine cotton or silk.  There are many types of ulos cloths, and all are believed to have magical religious power and are considered 'sacred.'  This piece is a ceremonial baby carrier/sling.  The traditional arrowhead shapes are the dominant pattern.
The colors are deep red, light brown and natural (difficult to see in the photo) made using coloring from barks, grass, roots and mud.  This piece is old.  Modern Batak pieces are often made using bright chemical dyes.
This weaving measures 64" long by 32" wide.  It's in very good condition for its age, with a few very small areas showing fraying of the threads when held up to the light, but otherwise unnoticeable.  This piece would make a striking wall hanging or a gorgeous shawl/scarf.
